Help with Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some Frequently Asked Questions, and their answers:
I can’t find a product I’m looking for on your web site.
Sometimes you just can’t find it. When that happens, please call us at (713) 923-9458. It’s not a bother, not an imposition, and we sure won’t mind! You can also send an e-mail to sales@coxhardware.com.
We offer several ways to search for products. Have you tried them all?
Search by description is the most popular method, but also the method most prone to failure. If we have abbreviated a descriptive feature of a particular item, that item may not show up in your search, even though we have it on-hand. Likewise, we may not call the item by the same name as you are searching for. To aid in descriptive searches, try using the wildcard “*” character in your search. For example, instead of “flourescent green” you could search for “flour* green”. Sometimes it takes a little work.
Search by manufacturer part number is also prone to failure, as sometimes there is a dash, a space or a letter missing from an otherwise perfect match.
Search by UPC is pretty specific, but only if you type in the full UPC number, including the leading and following check digits.
Search by Cox SKU is the fastest and surest method of getting right to the item. Remember, though, that all alpha characters in our system are in CAPITALS. The web server will not find lower case letters that are part of the SKU. (i.e. the corrct form is “GCAP12”, not “gcap12”)
Search by Department is more time consuming, but this method will always show the maximum number of possible items as you drill from a department into the sub-classes of merchandise. Also a great way to browse the inventory.
Search by print catalog: You can always search the print catalog using the item index we have provided, or just look from page to page. Additionally you can download your own Cox Hardware catalog and print it for off-line viewing. Items in the catalog are grouped into a Department/Class structure that makes it easy to compare similar items to see what is available.

I need an MSDS sheet on a product I purchased from Cox Hardware.
No problem. At this time, though, we don’t provide on-line MSDS sheets from our web site. You can call us at (713) 923-9458, or fax your request to (713) 923-9423. You can also email your request to sales@coxhardware.com. However you submit the request, please write our SKU number legibly and make sure you put your name and return fax number. We will fulfill MSDS requests as we receive them, in the order that they are received.
Alternately, you can go to the Vendor Links page and view the vendor’s web site. Most of our vendors make their MSDS sheets available in this manner. This is normally what we do when you request the information from us.
Sorry, but we do not provide MSDS sheets for products we do not sell, or for products we did not sell.
MSDS sheets are also available in-store at time of purchase. Just ask.

Why are the prices in the print catalog sometimes different from those shown in the Department listing or in the Virtual Hardware Store?
We thought long and hard about whether we should show the 2002 version of the print catalog on this web site, even though it shows the 2002 prices. We believe that the added visual benefit of the catalog far outweighs the drawback of displaying the old pricing. We apologize in advance if this causes any confusion. In late 2004 or early 2005 we will reproduce a version of the catalog that is designed for the Internet. It will not show prices, but each SKU shown in the catalog will be hyperlinked to the Virtual Hardware Store detail page. In that manner the pricing will always be accurate and up-to-date and this will become a moot issue.
Our print catalog was last produced in October of 2002. At that time, on the day it was produced, the prices listed were valid. Since that time, however, some prices have increased as the cost of the merchandise to us has increased. Stocking over 30,000 products, we change at least a few prices every day. When the catalog was produced in 2002 we added a price disclaimer to the bottom of each page that states "Prices in the print catalog are for reference only and will change without notice. To view current pricing please shop our On-Line Store." Again, we sincerely apologize in advance if this causes any confusion.

Sometimes the Virtual Hardware Store page says the server is unavailable. What gives?
When this message displays our VHS server is most likely running maintenance. Every night, from
22:00
to
23:00 CST
, the VHS is off-line for backups. Also, from 02:00
to
04:00
, we run nightly maintenance. We're sorry for the inconvenience, but these are critical applications we must run every day.
